Dog Licences & Legal Requirements

Dog Licences & Legal Requirements

Owning a dog involves a number of legal requirements; including having dog licences which are designed to ensure the well-being of your dog, and the public. When you decide to get a dog, you must be willing to fulfill these small legal requirements.

Dog Licences

If you have a dog; under the Control of Dogs Act 1986 all dog owners are required to have a dog licence. You can get a dog licence for the lifetime of a dog for €120 and you can get it online.

Dog Tags

Because your dogs can’t speak for themselves, if they go missing, it is important that whoever finds them knows how to contact you. Therefore, a dog must wear a collar at all times; with the name and address of the owner inscribed on it or on a tag. Failure to have identification on a dog can result in an on-the-spot fine issued by a dog warden. If you do not pay this fine on time, it can result in prosecution by your local authority. A wide selection of fashionable dog tags are available from your local Petmania store; and all tags can be engraved while you wait.

Dog Waste

Under litter laws (Section 22 of the Litter Pollution Act 1997); it is an offence to allow a dog under your control to foul in a public place. In conclusion, the person in charge of the dog is required, under this law to remove dog faeces; and dispose of it in a suitable, sanitary manner. Poo-bags and Pooperscoopers are available to purchase at all Petmania stores; so please do the right thing and clean up after your dog.
